Keeping little feet dry isn’t easy in rainy England, which is why we’ve tested and reviewed the best kids waterproof shoes and boots.
Nothing really beats the good old welly when it comes to keeping out water, but they aren’t practical for everything. As a family we walk, run, climb, cycle, scoot and jump in puddles almost every day, so we need a good variety of waterproof footwear.
From classic toddler wellies to high-performance trainers for schoolkids, here’s our round-up of the best kids waterproofs shoes and boots.
The Reima Leapster Rain Boots are more than your average welly. Made out of such nice, padded and soft material that you can’t believe they’ll be fully waterproof until you drop your kid shin deep in a muddy puddle. Constructed from rubber and neoprene they’re fully waterproof, but also lined with insulation and cotton for comfort. Not just that, they look cool and classy too. Not cheap at about £35, but then things this good very rarely are. Probably the best new bit of footwear we got for winter 2021.
What you’re basically getting with the Jack Wolfskin Cascade Texapore Lowe is hiking boots and robust trainers rolled into one. They’re tough, lightweight, breathable and fully waterproof, and although Jack Wolfskin class them as hiking shoes our 4-year-old uses them for everything from cycling and climbing trees to playing football and riding his scooter. You get heel and toe protectors, a cushioned midsole and sure-grip rubber outsole. They may seem pricey at £50, but we’ve seen them on sale as low as £25.
Protective, grippy, warm, comfy and waterproof, the Spotty Otter Fleece-Lined Adventure Wellies are awesome for everything from jumping in muddy puddles to paddling at the beach. They’re made from a strong and flexible rubber, with fleece lining for extra warmth, reflective strips and a drawstring toggle around the top so you can cinch them tight. The sizing is generous too, which meant our oldest lad wore them for well over a year. And they’re still in such good condition that they’ll still be good to go for his younger brother in a year or so.
This is our second inclusion in the round-up of best kids waterproof shoes and boots for Finnish brand Reima. The Kids Climb Shoes are a big favourite in our house, as much in terms of ease of use as performance. Due to having no laces to tie up, our 4-yerar-old loves them because he can just pull them on himself, tighten the elasticated drawstring lace, then head straight outdoors. They’re fully waterproof with excellent grip and and a really nice soft, cushioned feel to the upper and midsole. And the best bit? They’re fully machine washable so no matter how muddy you get them (see above) you can easily get them back looking as good as new.
The wellies pictured above are actually the Bogs Skippers, which don’t seem to be available any more, but we’ve included them because there are plenty of similar boots still available in the Bogs Solid Pull-up Boot range. And also because they’re brilliantly durable. Our Bogs wellies are now on kid number two and looking just as good as the day we first got them. They have nice premium touches like handles that make them easy to pull on, plus a well padded foam footbed that fights odours with DuraFresh technology. There are thousands of other options out there for kids’ wellies, but it’s little touches like this that make the Bogs range so appealing.
