The Ooni Fyra portable wood-fired outdoor pizza oven is fun, simple to use, brilliantly designed, and cooks pizzas in 2 minutes! Here’s our review…
If anyone ever told me I’d have a portable pizza oven in my garden worth more than £200, I would probably have laughed them out of town. And to be honest, even when I first took the Ooni Fyra portable wood-fired outdoor pizza oven out of the box I still wasn’t totally convinced.
It looked amazing, both in terms of design and build quality, and I was bowled over by how fast it claimed it could cook a pizza. But did I really need a pizza oven this good? A few months and many great pizzas later, the answer is a resounding YES. And here’s why…
Easy to use
Once you’ve removed the Ooni Fyra portable wood-fired outdoor pizza oven from its packaging, the set-up is incredibly simple. It all simply slots together by following step-by-step instructions in the manual, and within a few minutes you’ll be ready to go. You don’t use big dirty logs or coals to cook with, just simple wood pellets that get the oven up to optimum heat in around 15 minutes, then leaves almost zero mess or waste afterwards. I’ve never used pellets for a fire before, and I was amazed.
Quick to heat up
To light the Ooni Fyra portable wood-fired outdoor pizza oven, you simply load a few wood pellets into the back, drop a natural firelighter on top of them, then shut the door. The trick, as outlined in the manual, is to add more pellets little and often to keep the fire burning and the oven hot. Then, in quarter of an hour, you’re good to go.
Speedy cooking time
Now, I know nothing about cooking. But the trickiest part for us involved rolling and making the four pizzas in time for the next one to go straight into the oven after one came out. It was easy enough for our little family of four, with me trying to look important and keeping the oven hot while Gemma did an awesome job of making the pizzas. But when we tried it for around 10 people at a birthday party we messed the timings up (and I stupidly let the fire go out). The key is preparation, and once you’ve done it a couple of times you’ll be masters at having the next one ready to go as soon as the one before pops out, with the oven still piping hot. Ooni claim a 60-second cooking time and it’s definitely not far off. Our record is probably around 2 minutes.
I love pizzas, but always feel short-changed by something from a dodgy takeaway or supermarket freezer. I like them cooked properly in restaurants or, even better, in Italy. What I never imagined is that we’d be able to cook genuinely delicious wood-fired pizzas in our own garden. I still need to give plenty of credit to the chef (or she’ll kill me) but the Ooni Frya does the rest!
Easy to clean
Once you’re done, you can simply remove the stone baking board from inside the Ooni Fyra portable wood-fired outdoor pizza oven, wipe it down, empty the pellet tray, then you’re good to go again. We’ve used ours four or five times already and it still looks as good as new.
Compact and portable
Ooni say the Fyra is the ‘world’s first portable pizza oven fuelled by wood pellets’ and it’s probably that portable element that makes it even more impressive. Its legs fold down and the tall chimney on top is detachable, which makes it easy to chuck in the boot of your car and use on things like camping trips. What a piece of kit!
Outdoor Dad Verdict – Ooni Fyra portable wood-fired outdoor pizza oven
Easier to use than a BBQ, and cooks wood-fired pizzas so well you’d think you were eating them on the banks of Lake Garda. If you like cooking outdoors as a family, the Ooni Fyra wood-fired outdoor pizza oven isn’t far off being essential. The Outdoor Dad, August 2020
